Day Two: Tuesday, June 22, 2010 London to Roma
Heathrow and a last, brief taste of the Internet
I believe we arrived in London Heathrow at just about 11 a.m.. After leaving that plane, we had to take another train to the connecting flights, go through security again, and wait just a short time before boarding the next plane to Roma. In that British Airways lounge we also had a brief taste of the internet. It would turn out to be the last internet I would have easy access to until Friday.
I slept most of the way on that flight but was awake long enough to get the Tuna submarine sandwich…ewww.
Arrival in Roma and Quickly Whisked to Trastevere
We arrived in Roma at about 4 p.m., quickly found our driver (he had the cool hand lettered sign with our name on it and everything) and we were off speeding towards Trastevere and the start of our Roman adventure. The driver spoke very little English and although it was pouring rain and there was heavy traffic, we got to our place by about 6 p.m. The convent (not sure if it really is one anymore) is called Casa di Santa Francesca Romana a Ponte Rotto Via Vascellari, 61 The street that the convent is on is so narrow, he was not even able to drive right in front. He had to stop at a parking area and we all walked up.
The woman at the desk spoke very little English and she quickly got us our key, Room 302. It is really quite a lovely room, private bathroom, television to watch the World Cup, air conditioning and seems to be fairly quiet when the windows are closed and a beautiful courtyard in the middle of the buildings to hang out in..

Out on the Town
We fiddled with our stuff and got settled in and I tried to figure out the television. I finally found the World Cup matches, but the picture wasn’t the greatest. A seven inch screen is a little hard to deal with after getting used to 48" HD
At about seven we decided to walk around a bit. We walked through the Jewish Ghetto and eventually found largo Argentina where all the cats are but because it was raining there were no cats.
Largo Argentina: No cats but a lizard!
Good water everywhere in Roma
Next stop was the church, Sopra Minerva, where the Michealango statue of Christ is that has the added fig leaf but it was closed. Then to the Pantheon and its piazza to check out the action. Still can’t believe that we actually got to stay there at the Albergo del Senato.
The half scaffolded Pantheon. Kind of reminds me of the Phantom of the Opera.
Dinner at Our Spot in Rome - Osteria Del Sostegno
Since we were so close, we decided that we might as well try and have dinner at the Osteria del Sostegno and we discovered it was open at 7:30. We we had forgotten is how close it really is to the Pantheon. As you head up that side street, Via del Collonelle is really just the first street on the right.
Just take a right and you will find osteria Del Sostegno
Quite easy to direct people to. We got a table outside and we set for a great time.We started with a bottle of Pelligrino and a bottle of house wine.
Can't beat a good capresi
For an appetizer I got the Capresi with the bufala mozzerella.
Bruschetta pomodoro.
Next they brought out this bruschetta for no charge.
Taglialini with porcini mushrooms
Taglialini with zuxhini flowers
Melanzane parmesian
For the primi course I got a taglialini with porcini mushrooms and Christine got the same type of pasta with chopped zucchini flowers. Then for a secundo she got eggplant pamesian. For dessert the tiramisu was spectacular and we ended the evening with an espresso.

We couldn’t resist so we had a cup of gelato at Della Palma (limone, fragolina del Bosco, niccolo) but it was not amazingly good. We were probably just too full. Then we walked back to Trastevere and were able to get back home quite easily.
